Aberdovey Golf Club - Course Review

Wales Golf Holidays Director of Sales, Richard had the pleasure of playing one of the very best courses in Wales (ranked 3rd) and one of the purest links courses anywhere on the British Isles, the well renowned Aberdovey GC. He was fortunate enough to play this links beauty a week before the Welsh Seniors Championship, so the course was in immaculate condition from tee to green and provided a good test of golf.

Aberdovey GC is situated in the Snowdonia National Park at the mouth of the Dovey Estuary, and the links are wedged between the Cambrian Mountain range and the shore. The course is a traditional links layout – 9 out and 9 back – you just hope and pray that the wind is with you on the back 9! The course measures over 6,500 yards off the tips, so it will test even the longest of hitters.

The course features well situated bunkers that make some fairways look impossible to hit from the tee. Pot bunkers a plenty surround many of the greens, so be sure to steer clear of these little devils! Aberdovey GC has some of the purest putting surfaces of any course in Wales, they roll so true that if you miss a putt on these greens it's down to your stroke alone! In fact the greens are that good that former Masters Champ and Welsh golfing legend, Ian Woosnam used to practice here as preparation for the Masters every April. No higher praise right there!

Perhaps the most well-renowned hole on the course is the famous par three 12th hole, which has been redesigned in recent times, provides a spectacular backdrop when you reach the green. Turn to your right and you are greeted by a white sandy shoreline, waves crashing, seagulls gliding, it really is a stunning view and a great excuse for a quick on-course selfie!

A strong finish to the round awaits with the lengthy 17th & 18th holes, which present a beastly challenge when played into the wind! If you manage to finish par, par you will be buying the drinks at the bar!

After the round kick back on the veranda, (which overlooks the 18th green) with a cold one and reflect on what will be a most memorable experience.

If I had one would to describe the course it would be……..AberLovely!

Why not test your skills out on this fine traditional links?
