Fairwood Park Golf Club - Course Review

Fairwood Park GC is a pristine and picturesque parkland course located in the beautiful Gower Peninsula. The course boasts championship length and lays claim as the longest course in the Swansea area at over 6,600 yards.

As a course of muscular proportions, you will need to be swinging the driver well to combat the many lengthy par 4's at Fairwood Park.

This is evident from the get-go as you're faced with a long par 4 (435 yards) that often plays into the wind. You will need a strong opening tee shot to allow you the opportunity to have go at the green with a mid to long iron, even if you find the dance-floor par is far from guaranteed. What greets you is a green that bottle-necks towards the back with an undulating surface, which is sure to grab your attention. Don't switch off for a second or you'll be staring the dreaded 3 putt squarely in the face. Gladly 2 putt for par and walk to the next tee with your head held high, and chest puffed out as you will be sure to pick up a shot or 2 on your golfing chums.

There are many holes that could lay claim to be the "best" on the course, such at the water laden par 3 16th and great 18th finishing hole, but for us it has to be the demanding 9th hole. The 9th hole is stroke index 1 and for good reason. Measuring 445 yards off the white pegs, again you will need to hit your Sunday best with driver to get home in 2, but finding fairway is key as a large oak tree guards the green making the second shot extremely difficult. The bigger hitters will be able to fly the oak tree on the right with a mid-iron with the shorter hitters having to play a low penetrating shot up the left hand side carefully avoiding the large oak trees and a green-side bunker that protects the green. A small, slick and undulating green makes putting tricky, so par here is otherworldly! Your face will be beaming if you manage to make a par 4 here to finish the front 9 strongly.

The course has a wonderful mix of water laden par 3's, long demanding par 4's, a driveable par 4 and reachable par 5's, which makes for an interesting test. The course is also beautifully tree-lined from tee to green with the vast array of trees and foliage framing many of the holes wonderfully. If you enjoy parkland golf and hitting driver, this is the course for you!

All in all Fairwood Park offers golfers of all abilities a warm welcome, gentle walk, a great test of golf and stunning vista's aplenty. Why not try this stunning parkland gem for yourself on your next golf break to Wales?
