Tenby Golf Club - Course Review

Tenby GC is Wales’ oldest course measuring over 6,600 yards. It’s a traditional style links course that very much represents “golf as it was”. An “out & in” layout makes for a challenging round depending on the wind direction.

Each of the three par 5’s are all under 500 yards and should be reachable for most, so if you play these holes well it should help you to play to your handicap. The clever bunkering and undulating fairways at Tenby GC, make it imperative that you are accurate from tee to green and comfortable at playing from a variety of lies, seldom will you get an even stance or flat lie, which undoubtedly makes for an interesting round.

There are a number of holes that could take the accolade of being the “signature hole” but for us the 9th “Jenkins View” is our favourite on the course. Awe-inspiring views from an elevated tee catch the eye, with waves crashing onto Tenby’s South Beach to your right and Tenby town in the foreground; it really is a wonderful view.

Once you’ve got your breath back from those spectacular sea views, you are focused on what is a thin slither of fairway that dog legs slightly from left to right. The hole isn’t overly long [376 yards off the white pegs], but you must be accurate. The hole typically plays into the wind off the right and you will probably have to hit at least a 3 wood to leave yourself a decent view of a fairly hidden and well protected green that plays uphill.

There is plenty of room to miss the fairway left, but if you go right, you’ll be reaching in your bag for a provisional! Once you’ve negotiated the tricky tee shot and avoided the fairway bunkers, a difficult 2nd shot awaits. In most cases you will be hitting into the green with a mid- iron, which plays directly into the prevailing wind, so clubbing up is key. If you miss the dance-floor you’ll be in the thick stuff and you’ll do well to find your ball. The 9th hole at Tenby GC is indicative of the course as a whole; not overly long, accuracy is key, spectacular views aplenty and pot bunkers galore!

All in all Tenby GC is one of the most enjoyable links courses anywhere in Wales. It offers the skilled golfer enough of a test to keep him or her guessing and is fair enough to allow the higher handicap golfer a realistic chance of making par and even a few birdies!
