The Glamorganshire Golf Club - Course Review

The Glamorganshire GC is a James Braid design championship parkland course that is home to the Stableford scoring system. Set in Penarth (South Wales), this parkland gem boasts views of the Bristol Channel as well as a rich golfing history (est. 1890).

The course is a par 70 that measures just over 6,000 yards. Don’t be fooled by the overall yardage of the course as there are plenty of meaty par 5’s & five par 4’s that are well over 400 yards in length off the back pegs.

The front 9 is most probably where your score will be made with three par 5’s in play and a couple of short par 4’s, which should offer up birdie chances.

The back 9 is where you hold on to your score. Holes 15 through to 18 provide a stern test that all offer potential scorecard wrecking numbers if you are wayward. A double-bogey can be remedied by the stunning views of the West Country and the Bristol Channel when you reach the 16th green and 17th tee box.

There are many candidates for the “signature” hole, but for us the 15th hole takes that accolade! A strong par 4 measuring over 400 yards, stroke index 2; this hole is all about the tee shot. Trees left & right make the hole appear much narrower than it actually is; it looks almost like an alleyway with a slither of fairway in the distance. If you manage to negotiate the tee shot you will be faced with a tricky approach shot playing well up hill, be sure to take at least one club more or you could find yourself running back off the false front leaving you with a hideously difficult chip! If you do manage to find the green in regulation you will be faced with an undulating putting surface that slopes from back to front, you will do well to find a straight putt on this green!

All in all Glamorganshire GC offers a fair test to golfers of all skill levels. True putting surfaces, well bunkered holes, demanding tee shots & views aplenty, all make for a most enjoyable round.
