Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club - Course Review

Pyle and Kenfig GC is a rugged championship links course set in the dunes in South Wales.

Unusually for a links course, P&K is made up of 2 loops of 9 holes, with the front being the “scoring” side and the back is where you try and hold onto your score!

The first is a short par 4 that breaks you gently into the round, a fairly innocuous looking hole that most will be able to par and walk to the 2nd tee feeling good about their start. The 2nd hole is in stark contrast to the first, it’s a real brute of a hole that plays well over 400 yards. A bunker laden fairway makes for an intimidating tee shot, the bigger hitters will be able to take these "nasties" on and if struck well the drive should reach the flat of the fairway and leave a fairly straightforward approach. If you happen to miss-hit your tee shot and find one of the pot bunkers, you will be wedging out and looking a double in the face if you get too greedy and try and reach the green in 2 blows! A couple of reachable par 5’s with a mixture of short par 4’s and well bunkered par 3’s make for an enjoyable front 9 that is “gettable” if you’re swinging well.

The back 9 begins with stroke index 1, so hopefully you’ve managed to birdie the reachable par 5, 9th as you may drop a shot or 2 on this hole if you miss the tight fairway. You will need to take advantage of the short par 5, 11th as there are a number of tough par 4's ready and waiting to ruin your card. 16, 17 & 18 might be the 3 toughest finishing holes in Wales when played off the white pegs or championship tees.

For us the signature hole at P&K is the 14th. When you make it to the tee you are greeted by a 360 degree view of the course, the sea and the coast of Porthcawl.

What awaits you after you’ve soaked in the views? A tough dogleg left to right par 4 measuring over 400 yards off the championship tees. Playing almost across the fairway makes the target area appear even narrower than it already is. This hole is all about the tee shot, if you can somehow find the fairway with your drive, you will be left with a mid to short iron to a sloping green from back to front that has a nasty pot bunker guarding the left side. A 2 putt isn’t guaranteed here as this is a really tricky green with many undulations. A par here will make you feel like a Tour Pro!

All in all P&K has it all, scoreable par 5’s, tough par 4’s, well bunkered par 3’s, true undulating putting surfaces and sea views a plenty! What more can any golfer want from a round?

Why not test your skills out on this fine championship links for yourself?
