Machynys Peninsula Golf Club – Course Review

Machynys Peninsula GC is a Nicklaus design course located in Llanelli in South West Wales. This modern links is extremely well architected, with 18 superb holes of championship golf.

Machynys Peninsula GC is a contrast to many of the typical links courses found in Wales. As it is relatively new (est 2005) it has a modern design and feel to it. It is perhaps the most immaculate links course in the county, there is always impressive delineation between fairways and greens. The fairways are lush and the fringes & putting surfaces are first class, the course is sight to behold at the height of summer with its seemingly green glow.

The course plays over 7,000 yards off the championship tees and the wind is ever present around this modern links. Extremely well positioned bunkers make many tee shots look much more daunting than they actually are, but if you happen to be in one you will more than likely be wedging out. The same goes for the green-side bunkers that are again, well positioned and deep! They might not be traditional pot style bunkers, but they are very much a hazard, you will be more than happy just to get your ball out of them!

The signature hole at Machynys is the 16th and what a hole it is! This stroke index 2 measuring over 400 yards is a stunning looking hole from the tee box with an intimidating tee shot to the eye. Thick rough left and right with a fairway bunker up the left hand side and a bunker to the right, with a few more scattered around short of the green and green-side itself. It’s easy to see why so many people struggle with this demanding tee shot. The ideal line is over the bunker up the left hand side as this will leave you the shortest approach to a green that is well above the level of the fairway. The hole is right to left and typically plays into the wind & uphill, so it will take a good biff to carry the fairway bunkers and the second shot plays at least 2 clubs more. The green also slopes severely from back to front. The green, with its false front can make you look quite silly if you get too fiery with your putter, you can easily putt your ball off this slippery surface! If you’ve managed to make a par at this beautiful brute of a hole you can admire the view of the estuary over the back of the green and if you’ve had the misfortune of making a double bogey or worse, this view is sure to help you forget about it as you walk to the next tee! Hands down one the best par 4's in the country.

From the billiard like tees; to the pristine fairways, this course is a joy to play; everything about the set-up at Machynys is first class, whether it is the practice facilities, clubhouse or the course itself. You will not be disappointed by any element that Machynys Peninsula GC has to offer.
