Southerndown Golf Club – Course Review

Southerndown GC is not your typical championship links course. This par 70 is best described as a “heathland-links” or “downland-links” that plays around 6,500 off the white pegs.

The opening hole plays considerably uphill with gorse lurking left and right. It is a fairly generous fairway, but the gorse & ferns makes it appear much narrower. You will need to hit one of the longer clubs in the bag to make sure you have a view of the green for your second shot. Once you reach the green you are greeted by stunning views of Porthcawl and the Bristol Channel.

The course has that “springy” links turf that is a pleasure to play off, there is nothing quite like striking a pure wedge off it. The course has a number of undulating holes with rolling fairways that present a challenge of their own as you will rarely have a flat lie at Southerndown. The greens are pure of roll and receptive enough that a well struck mid-iron will comfortably hold onto the dance-floor.

A good mixture of short & long par 4’s and reachable par 5’s together with well bunkered par 3’s make for a most pleasant round of golf. Whether you are an 18 handicap golfer or a scratch player, Southerndown will offer an enjoyable test to all that are lucky enough to play it.

Southerndown has one of the finest finishing holes of any championship course in Wales and most would agree that it is the signature hole of the course. Measuring over 400 yards in length, you play to a split level fairway, miss left and you’re in the gorse, miss right you’re in the gorse! If the hole plays into the wind it’s a good drive and mid to long iron for most, to a well-protected green. A potential scorecard wrecker if you’re not in the zone!

Southerndown should definitely be on your bucket-list of Welsh courses to play!
