Radyr Golf Club - Course Review

Radyr GC is a championship parkland course situated in the capitol of Wales, Cardiff. One of only 4 courses in South Wales, designed by fabled course architect Harry S Colt, it measures a little over 6,000 yards off the white pegs, par 69. Don’t be fooled by this somewhat ‘short’ course as there are a number of obstacles that await you.

With the course only being 6,053 yards in total length it doesn’t really tell the true story. With 6 par 4’s over 400 yards even the biggest of hitters will be examined around this course. There is a good mixture of shorter risk-reward holes and some beautifully designed par 3’s, all well bunkered & contoured. Tree-lined fairways focus the eye as well as the good delineation between fairway and first cut, and if you manage to avoid the foliage you will need to negate the well protected greens.

Then there’s the greens……my, oh my are these surfaces slick! During the height of summer Radyr’s green speeds peak as high as 11 on the stimpmeter, which will test your nerve on even the shortest of putts. Not only are the greens lightning fast, but they are small, undulating and true. Your iron and approach play must be accurate around here or you will find any number of run-offs and immaculately raked bunkers. Radyr is most definitely a “second shot golf course”.

Demanding tee shots await you on a number of holes at Radyr, but none other than the 9th. Nearly 450 yards in length, the hole sweeps right to left. You will ideally need to hit a high draw to fit this dog-leg hole and with it being such a brute, you will be forced in to hitting driver, not ideal for any of your slicers out there! If you do manage to execute arguably the hardest tee shot on the course then an enormously undulating fairway awaits! The bigger hitters can clear the large mountainous camber on the right, with the shorter hitter struggling to see the green for their second shot. Just an all round stunning golf hole and my favourite of all at Radyr.

All in all Radyr GC offers, a warm Welsh welcome, fast and true greens, and a fair test of golf that can be enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels.

Radyr GC is an ideal addition to your South Wales tour when based in Cardiff at the likes of the Marriott Cardiff City Centre & The Village Hotel at Coryton, which both have a new affiliation & partnership with the club.

Why not test your skills on this fine championship parkland for yourself?
