Langland Bay GC - Course Review

Often thought of as the ‘Gem’ of the Gower peninsula, Langland Bay GC has arguably one of the most picturesque and dramatic backdrops of any club in Wales. On arrival the views are immediately striking which start the golfing juices flowing before you have even picked up a club.

Joined by my fellow golfing stalwarts Griff, Matthew & James we were eager to take on this 6000 yard par 70 coastal parkland beauty. Unfortunately on this particular day the Sun had forgot his hat and we were resigned to playing head to toe in waterproof gear but this didn’t deter us. The opening hole is a strong par 3 that measures just under 200 yards which grabs the attention, a long iron or a hybrid for most will suffice to get the ball on the dance floor.

The first 4 holes are what you would expect of a parkland course, trees aplenty, very green and well-manicured. Then you get to the 5th hole and that is where things start to feel and look a little different. By the time you get to the 7th tee with sea in the background and the beach in the foreground it really does feel like you’re on a championship links with imagery that is almost of Pebble Beach standard.

The crashes of the waves resonate around the course and can be heard on almost every hole and it is these sounds which offer a reminder when you’re on holes like 13 & 14 (where there is no view of the sea) that you’re just a stone’s throw away from magical Mumbles and the coast.

The par 36 front 9 offers, I feel, more birdie opportunities with a number of drivable par 4’s included. You really need to make your score on the front as the back 9 has a few holes which can bear their teeth. Holes 16 & 17 in particular are potential scorecard wreckers!

The greens on this day although wet, were running at a good speed and we all found them to be extremely true surfaces as well as good draining.

Even in the wet conditions that we endured for 18 holes all us of came away with some fond memories in particular Griff’s incredible tee shot on the par 4 fourth hole where he drove his ball to within 5ft of the pin in 1! (and missed the putt for eagle).

All in all Langland Bay GC is a beautiful coastal parkland course that presents a fair test to golfers of all skill levels. A good mixture of short risk reward par 4’s and longer more demanding par 4’s & reachable par 5’s make for a most enjoyable round. If you’re in West Wales then this is a MUST play course!
